Was hoping to get more mileage out of Troll #9 but it is not to be I guess. Lets try this - What is your most pressing medical issue not related to Scleroderma? How does your SD treatment interface with and perhaps complicate the treatments for your other medical problems?

Mine is that I have painful bone spurs and plantar fasciatis in my feet, (left being the worse) I had been getting treatment for that, for a few years in the form of steroid shots, which made it better for months, so I would wait until they got really sore before I went again... well after the onset of my SD symptoms, I was going to the foot doctor, he gave me two shots in my foot and it got worse! We couldn't figure what was going on....(i wasn't diagnosed yet!) anyway, it makes it hard for me to walk, so...I REALLY have to pace myself....can't go into the supermarket, without riding the electric carts, on days when it's not too busy.... I really must wonder, if this is part of it, as I have seen some people with SD complaining of foot pain! the upside of this...I really don't spend too much time shopping, which is prolly a good thing ;D But I was a huge couponer(had a binder!!LOL)..I saved lotsa $$ doing that, always feeling I had one up on 'em.. . I would hit 3-4 stores in one day....spending little and getting much Nancy...

Nancy - I would think that the SD could be making your already sore feet worse. Many of us suffer from foot pain, the SD erodes the fatty tissue on the bottoms of our feet. Just like the pits many of us get in the tips of our fingers (not the digital ulcers). I feel that my foot pain was in part the fatty tissue erosion and maybe hyper sensitivity in the feet similar but not as severe as the pain in my hands. The latter is just a guess on my part. Fortunately the foot pain passed a while ago and I can walk barefoot again, previously the tile floor in the bath was incredibly painful. Wow three or four stores in a day. Did they have to layoff people at those stores when your SD became active?

I could barely wear shoes for about 2 years as I could not stand to have anything touch my feet, particularly the tops.. I had to wear rainbow flipflops (they are thick and have arches). It was so bad at one time that "air" hurt my feet. I could not walk barefoot at all. (I can now).
The only un-related problem I had was the need for 2 knee replacements. (Had one already). There was the concern that my knee would not heal. However, I was REALLY getting better by then. The left the staples in a little longer, but I healed beautifully and have almost no scar.
Interestingly, the knee surgeon (and the surgeon who referred me to him) said that the need for the knee replacement was because the METHOTREXATE I took early on for this disease (and it did not work), destroyed the cartilage in my already troublesome knees. Apparently, Methotrexate attacks, cartilage. I learned something!

Jeff....I know this troll is regarding issues that are not sclero related, but the medical issues I'm currently dealing with are dental issues, which are..in my case... "sclero-related". I am a dental phobe! I get cleanings every 3 months and recently developed a cavity which is uncomfortable to fill. I wasn't comfortable with my current dentist(didn't seem confident), so I found a WONDERFUL female (sorry men) dentist and she is very knowledgeable/professional, yet compassionate and patient. So far, I have nice teeth and would like to continue, but having a smaller mouth makes fillings a struggle. I also need to have a back moler pulled, but will be asleep so that isn't a problem for me. ;D

Jeff, now that is a hoot... All kidding aside, the stores were all within one mile of each other.... I am a pretty frugal person....would scope out the best deals.... I grew up in a huge family( 9 brothers & sisters).....so I think it's something from my environment....

Kathsherman - Teeth are certainly fair game here and the trolls are not all that structured anyway. I think lots of us have teeth that have moved and pain associated with the movement, others seem to have brittle or soft teeth as a result of SD. None of it any fun. Good luck with that cavity.
Nancy - saving money is certainly not a vice particularly in this economy. Save on.

Mine is spinal stenosis, scoliosis and degenerative discs in my back. Ortho surgeon at Rush Univiersity Hoap. in Chicago has recommended fusing 5 vertabrae and doing 3 laminectomies. I am really resistant to all this surgery as I believe I might have more problems than what I starterd with. Pain is an everyday occurence and it affects my abilities to get around but thanks to Norco I can make it for now with some limitations. I guess I will eventually have to deal with this but I am not ready. I do plan on seeking the opinion of several neurosurgeons before I make any decsisons. I know many people who have not had sucessful back surgery.

I've been called cheap....but sometimes I'm expensive....depends on what I want I guess....I've been on a hand gun buying binge...I have one more that I want and I think I'll be done...then it's back to boating stuff......
I never tied in my feet cuz I've been fighting that battle for yrs...I never put it too SD since my SD came on many yrs after I had my heal spur ....so..I don't think that kind of pain is indicative of a symptom of SD.....not sure...all I know is my feet have been killing me...kinda like being sent to a turkish prison..hung upside down and beat severely on the bottoms of my feet......

I've had to have 4 melanomas surgically removed- fortunately only 3 surgeries. My sd doc thought that the melanomas erupted when my sd was either very active or in a flare-up, but I don't believe there's any hard evidence to support that- it was just her hunch. It's definitely an interesting thought though.
Then of course there was the healing issues to deal with-and we all know how slowly we heal!! I had to keep my areas bound up tightly for longer than someone else may have had to, but when it was all over everything was fine! Thank goodness for that and the fact that I didn't need any additional treatments!- Adriane

Steve - I have never had bone spurs etc. I have a job where I am on my feet all day and never had any pain until my SD became active. I know I have spoken with others that have also experienced foot pain not attributable to bone spurs and the like. I think like so many SD issues as individuals we get one from column A and some from column B but each of us doesn't get the total package... fortunately cause that is way too much bad stuff. After starting AP my foot pain to begin to diminish and now is gone. Maybe coincidental but I'm blaming SD. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

For years I've had trouble with my back. Finally was diagnosed about 4 years ago with degenerative disc disease. Nothing has been done about it except an occasional vicodin. Dr mentioned sending me to a pain clinic. Think I'm going to take him up on the offer. Also have osteoarthritis in knees. Had one knee replacement last year and have more pain now than ever before. My doc seems to think it's a muscle problem and that I need to exersize more. He's probably right but it just about kills me to be on my feet for any length of time. Started on an exersize bike, now we will see if I can tolerate that.

Unfortunately or fortunately, however one wants to look at it. All of my health issues are SD related. I was in pretty good health until the SD started. I am grateful because dealing with this disease is a daily and sometimes hourly battle.

I'm in the same boat, fortunately I think- who needs more problems than SD. My health issues seem to be SD related. Not really anything outside of the SD envelope. I have found that many aches and pains I had before my SD went active have gone away now so I think that my SD has been around a long time.
Sherion - I think you are saying your muscle problems are in your knee area? I used to have a lot of back problems and feared that my problem was disk or something but over time I have come to realize that my problems were muscle related not disc as yours are. The disk problem has to be very painful. Good luck on the exercise bike. The activity is most beneficial.
