I have never been a heavy drinker, but since I got sick I figured it would be wise to take care of the only bod I have. I haven't had an alcoholic drink since June '08. The hubby and I have a pact that I won't drink until a year after the stem cell transplant. Of course, my doctors are going to tell me not to drink, and I would have to be an idiot to take Oxycontin and Oxycodone and drink, but I think that with some planning a few drinks for my wedding anniversary might be O.K. I guess what I am looking for is anecdotal info from other sd sufferers on whether they have given up the bottle or drink in moderation.

oh man...funny you should mention this one....I have been dx'd with diabeties now and with the lantus pens....I am not supposed to drink.... a few weeks ago I had myself a glass of wine..which by the way was about a half a bottle with the size of wine glass they gave me..... I ....was......hammered!!!.....one glass and I was a stumbling drunken sailor...
so..be careful....maybe only a small glass of something...my doc told me that to do it in total moderation.....I also like a nice whiskey and coke....or long island iced tea in the summer on the boat....but nooooooooooooo....can't have that anymore...

Dr's have never said anything to me. I don't too much since my 20's but do like to take the occasional at the cottage or functions. I just plan with my meds and take it easy. Haven't over done it since last July at my nieces wedding, which by the way I had a great time and yes, had more then just a few!!

I was told that alcohol makes the antibiotic I take (minocycline) ineffctive so I didn't have anything to drink for quite some time. Then recently I was hit with some new, serious medical issues and really felt like I needed something to drink to relax at night (I was a wreck!). I really think that a few drinks to celebrate your wedding anniversary would be fine- you deserve to celebrate!!- but I really can't give any advice on the medical aspect of it. Hope you have a nice anniversary!- Adriane

well, i can tell you that jeff likes to have a couple of beers a day. i talked to his AP dr. about it and he didn't have a problem with that, even with all the meds jeff was on at the time (which was more than now). jeff said to me "this damn disease took everything away from me, and it's not taking my couple of beers a day away!). laurie

Aha! The Fangs gave me the answer I wanted. I guess I can disregard the rest and crank up some daily beer drinking! haha Really, I am trying to get an idea if anyone had a bad experience with drinking and a worsening of the Scleroderma symptoms. In some ways, after the stem cell transplant, I am in remission, and wouldn't trade this for anything. Of course, in some ways I am still a cripple...like my claw hands, and shoulder, knee and hip joint pain and immobility. So, if I could add back some normalcy like some beers with the hubby on Friday nights, etc that would be a real boon to my psychological state.

personally I'd say do it in moderation...it will dull the pain a little....but it might take you a few days to recover after it...

I have been curious also about a glass of wine, too. I've called the pharmacist and asked about the drugs I'm on verses the alcohol. They seem to have the best answers....better them than the Md's when I've asked them. They say fine but be careful but one drug I was one was a definite 'NO" so that is why I check with the pharmacist.
Whatever you decide, I hope you have a fabulous anniversary!

I don't drink alcohol but rarely, like an anniversary or something. I don't drink because of all the meds I am taking. If it is a special occasion, I am sure not to take any pain meds or anything like that. But as Steve said, be careful. When we were away last month I had one drink and felt like I was hammered. I'm not much of a drinker which is probably good because I am on Minocin. However, I have been known to get hammered by knocking back a couple of rumrunners or some Riesling. My doctor never said a word about alcohol, in fact, I have gone to dinner with him and had wine. So, I am with the rest of the gang. A drink or 2 is probably not going to hurt you.
