For the last few weeks, I sound like I have laryngitis. I haven't had a cold or any other symptoms. It is just my voice. Has anyone else experienced this? I just wondered if it had anything to do with scleroderma or if it was just one of those things.

Early in my AP treatment I had a period of time when I had crud in my throat and I would be hoarse. Lasted several weeks IIRC.

According to the ENT (ear nose throat) Dr., acid reflux (common in sclero) and fibrotic changes in the throat/larynx can be possible reasons or it may simply be allergies. Or.....a combination of several/all the above. Sometimes we are unaware of the acid traveling back up into the throat area and it can irritate the tissue lining. If thats the case, the doctor can give you medication to help, along with proper diet, no eating before bedtime and sleep in an elevated position. Hope this helps....kathleen xo

Bingo! Kathleen I had forgotten about that part. When I had a bout of reflux I would have the cruddy throat thing for about a week while things healed I guess. That was before AP and fortunately my reflux episodes are more rare now, I guess I have figured out how to reduce the reflux with the meds and diet etc.

Thanks for the responses. I am going to see the ENT on Tuesday to figure out what is going on. I seem to have the reflux under control so I'm not sure that's what's causing it. I take Nexium, have my bed elevated, eat a boring diet and don't eat for at least 3 hours before bed. I'm hoping it is viral. Whatever it is I hope it goes away soon. It's hard to communicate to 3 kids and cheer for them at their hockey games with no voice!

I had my appointment with the ENT this morning. I had the lovely tube put up my nose and down my throat (always pleasant). Anyways, you were right Kathleen. There is some swelling behind the voice box caused by reflux. It was a bit surprising because I don't notice reflux any more and thought I had it under control. I have to start taking Nexium twice a day now (which is no big deal) since I am doing all of the other things (i.e. boring diet, no alcohol/caffeine, elevating head of bed, no food 3 hours before bed). Thankfully that's all it was. Now hopefully I can get my voice back so my kids can hear me yelling (er.....I mean cheering) at their hockey games!

Ha ha Steve! Yes my hubby is liking the voice a bit too much. I'm having to use sign language now when I talk to him to keep him away!
