Interesting article Kathy. Also interesting is that mino IS listed by the Arthritis Foundation as a DMARD or "disease modifying anti rheumatic drug" for arthritis treatment. Mino has anti inflammatory properties and anti collagen properties. So it can be helpful even without getting into the "bacterial" theory IMO.
Within the AP community there is debate about why mino can be helpful for SD. Some base its effectiveness on the anti collagen properties and others the anti bacterial effect. I only have my experience to go on but from how things appear to have worked for me in regard to antibiotics I believe both scenarios, anti collagen and anti bacterial have helped my SD.
In regard to the antibiotics causing Lupus that can be a risk but from what I read the chances are about 1 in 100,000 for mino. There are other drugs that have a much higher incidence of DIL. When a person so affected stops taking the offending drug, there are about forty that can cause DIL, the DIL usually reverses.
Thanks for posting that.

My doctor told me (and I won't say it all correctly, but here it is in a nutshell), the Minocin works because it blocks, or stops or changes an ENZYME which is associated with causing scleroderma. (He was on his way out the door when we had this discussion and I could kick myself for not writing it down so I could say all this better.)

I have heard something similar. If you can treat scleroderma in the early stages with AP it will stop it from getting worse.

I was in really bad condition by the time I started Minocin. However, I had started the Photopheresis 3 months before the doctor agreed to add the Minocin. I have continued with both and am doing very well. Look for my post under SHAMLESS TROLL #16.
