Ok....so last Tuesday my doc increased my mino pills from Mond, Wed, and Friday to everyday. And day before yesterday, 8 days after the increase I developed severe itching, swelling and pain. The on-call doc that night said to stop the antibiotic and take benadryl which I did and it did not help!!! Yesterday I went to see my doctor and was going out of my mind!!! The itching was so bad I was in tears and my blood pressure was 187/81!!! Doc said I had to calm down. I said ummmmm you deal with this. I had not slept in 2 days due to the itching. My family doc said he didn't think it was a allergic reaction, but instead herxing. He gave me to scripts. Zantac which yes is for stomach issues but he said it has a good antihistamine (spelling bad) in it and a nerve pill call atarax which also helps with itching. I took the pills at 1:30 yesterday afternoon and slept till 5am today. I did however manage to talk to a few people on the phone but do not remember it, also went to pick the hubby up from work at 5, don't remember doing that either.
I am still not back on the antibiotic and if this is a herxing thing I do not know how long I can deal with that. I am still itching today but not as bad. I have the swelling and pain to the touch. I call my doc and left a message telling him still having same problems just not as bad and asked if I will be starting back on the AP or not. Waiting for a call back still.
Has anyone else experienced this as a herxing??? I have done alot of reading on AP and I don't recall seeing people having the itching and swelling as a herx symptoms.

Hey Terri I was wondering how things were going, you had kind of dropped of the face of the earth here. If I am understanding this correctly your problems started when you increased your mino dose. Maybe your doc would drop your dosage and see what happens or rather in your case start you on mino again at the old or lower dose? I'm no doc but would be curious as to cause and effect of that. I never did the IVs so am not well versed what is "normal" with IVs. I hope your doc calls back soon and can work this out. I did itch a lot after starting mino but I had itched before just from the SD. The after mino pattern of itching was different though and gradually went away but was quite intense for a while. As for the swelling are they areas that were swollen before or new areas? My extremities were swollen but don't remember if they became more swollen after mino or not, I don't think they were. I hope he calls back so you can get this resolved I'll be interested in what your doc decides to do. Let us know the outcome.

Hi Jeff Well talked to the doc and he is keeping me on the zantac cause of the antihistamine and put me on xyzal as well. I asked about restarting the mino and he said no! So now I have no hope left at all. I guess i will go to see him in a couple of weeks and see what he says then, but by then the whole i.v treatment I would think would have been for nothing if I go 2 or 3 weeks without restarting the mino.
Wasnt around here lately because I was feeling so exhausted from watching my granddaughter last week and this week I have been pretty sick from the mino. The intense itching and swelling sarted 8 days after the increase of mino. I had no itching before. The swelling is in areas I have always had it but now to the point that I can not close my hand at all and my knees and feet are numb from being so swollen. The areas are also red and extremely hot to the touch.
I can only hope that maybe he will give it a try again in a couple of weeks. I have to get my skin healed up a bit, as I have raw open spots from scratching.

It would be ashame to lose that jump you got from the IVs. I hope you get your itching under control and the doc comes around to a solution for you.
I never had any heat in my itchie areas. Maybe someone will chime in with some info for you.
PMd you

I don't want to be a know-it-all or anything, but I have a reason for the heat in the swollen areas. The swelling is due to dilation (opening) of blood vessels to the area (common in inflammation) and therefore an increased supply of blood (oxygen, warmth). It is the body's attempt to bring good stuff to the area to help it (heal). Ironically enough, this is a good thing to have occur to those of us with severe Raynaud's as we are having pain and damage to areas due to lack of blood and oxygen supply to our digits. Hope this helps...

Christel that is interesting! So the increased blood flow would be a good thing but Terri may be experiencing too much of a good thing all at once. Thanks for the knowledgable input. I never underwent IVs so I am not up to speed with effect of the Clindy. I would think that my process with oral antibiotics would be slower or more gradual anyway. Differnt process to achieve the same hoped for ends. Pretty interesting stuff this.

Terri, I don't have an answer to your question about what it is that's going on- I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am for you!! Several years ago I DID have an allergic reaction to a medication that I was on and, boy, was the itching AWFUL!!! I thought I was going to tear my skin off and lose my mind!! I had to stay home for 4-5 days because I couldn't do anything other than itch!! It really is an awful thing to go thru- I hope this all resoloves itself for you soon!- Adriane
