Well the infusion at the home health care office did not go so well. Nurse had a very hard time getting the i.v through my thick veins. She showed me and my mom how to do the infusions and to do the flushes which actually is not that difficult to do, except when you are by yourself and only can really use one hand.
The medicine is in a really neat ball thing called an Eclipse Ball. It’s just a round ball with the medicine inside it and when it is connected to my i.v the medicine is given at an exact rate without any pumps or anything. The medicine is inside the ball under pressure and when activated it releases at the correct rate. I can throw it in my purse or pocket and move around as normal without dragging an i.v pole around with me.
As I was sitting there getting my first dose of the Mino I was sitting there looking at the sticker on the i.v ball. Had the normal stuff, my name, my doctor’s name and the dosage. That’s when I became a bit upset. I am to start on 300mg twice a daily. BUT the sticker on my medicine said 600mg!!!!! So I got up and walked into the office area where my nurse was sitting and said “” Ummmm I am supposed to be starting out on 300mg”” she said “yeah” I told her “THIS IS A 600MG!!!!” she said “let me see”……..”OMG” she said….. So then she talked to the pharmacist and he said it would be ok, that I was not going to hurt me just that I got a big boost on treatment. That is EXACTLY what the doctor was trying to avoid you idiots!!!!! That is why I am going 7 days instead of 5 to avoid the bad side effects and bad herxing!!! I always thought the first thing they teach nurses is to triple check all info BEFORE administering medicine!! People die from screw ups like this!!! She said she would be filling out an incident report and that she was very sorry!! So they disconnected my eclipse ball and sent me home with a huge bag of supplies and i.v med.
I went home and called my doctor right away and spoke with the nurse that I always talk to in his office and told her….. Ummmm not sure if you know this or not but the home healthcare company is starting the i.v’s giving first dose and showing us how to do it and then sending us on our way home to do it ourselves” Heather, the nurse in my docs office, said you have to be kidding me. I told her nope. She said that is not what the orders call for and that is not the impression they gave her when she called the orders in. She took my number and said she will be discussing it with the doctor and calling me back. I said ummmmm wait there is more. I told her about the nurse’s screw up of giving me double dose amount and she flipped out!!! She said let me call you right back. About an hour later my doctor called me and was livid with screw up! As I knew he probably would be. He called the nurse and her supervisor himself and I guess really gave it to them. He said let just keep fingers crossed that I don’t have any complications from this. He told me if I was comfortable doing the i.v myself at home that I could but if I had any fears of doing it would make damn sure a nurse was here twice a day to do it for me. I told him it’s not that hard actually with this eclipse ball thing and as long as I can find someone to help me a little I was ok with it.
Well I got home after my first treatment and was so sick to my stomach, which is most likely because I was giving wrong amount. I was vomiting for about 2 hours afterwards then just kind of tired and weak. Then about 7pm came around and my mom came over to show my daughter and hubby how to do the infusion. What a joke my house was at that time. I had my youngest daughter come over from her dad’s house, which she brought her stepmom with her who is an lpn, I had my oldest daughter here and her boyfriend and my grandbaby, my middle daughter here with her girlfriend and hubby trying to fix dinner. Puppies got out of kennel and peed and pooed all over the kitchen. My 3 older dogs were barking nonstop because of all the chaos and the baby was screaming at the top of her lungs from teething. I thought my head was going to exploded. My mom is trying to show Kelsey, my youngest, how to do it and she was having a hard time remember everything and Kelsey was grabbing at the i.v ball saying just let me figure it out. I was freaking out!!!!! Dogs barking, baby screaming, hubby yelling, kids fighting and yelling…………………….After they got everything hooked up, I actually took the baby and went into the bedroom and paced back and forth trying to calm her down some. Got the baby settled back down after an hour of her screaming and crying, got the dogs back in crate sent my mom home and my daughter and her stepmom back to my ex and disconnected the i.v when it was done and sat down and just cried…… then about an hour later I was in bathroom again vomiting.
Went to bed and refused to get out of bed till this morning when Kelsey came up to start my morning i.v. which went smoothly and most importantly quietly!!!
No change in my symptoms yet. But of course it’s only been a day. Lol
