What I have read about AP is that many drugs used seemed to be penicillin based...is this true? Plus, I get diarreha from penicillin and penicillin based meds...is there any chance that I would not have this problems if I did AP for treatment? I am curious about this because I would like to have this treatment as an option. Thank you for your input.

Hi Becjo; The antibiotics that are used for AP are usually in the tetracycline family and sometimes clindamycin and zithromax are added.Have you read the bulletin board ar www.rbfbb.org to see how people are doing? You can read the posts without joining.Use the "search" at the top of the page to only get the posts you want. The technical information is at www.roadback.org and you can print out the fact sheets for your doctor

Good question and I really don't know the answer. I just did a quick search of tetracyclines and it does not say that they are penicillin based. But that would not be definitive anyway. I think that the best answer to your question might be provided by your pharmacist. At least as to what antibiotics are penicillin based. They use many different types of antibiotics for in AP treatments, I would hope one would agree with you. When you are on antibiotics do you take probiotics? That is very important even for a short course of antibiotics. I take four with my lunch every day. Just be sure to take the probiotics a couple of hours before or after the antibiotics. Do you have a doctor you feel comfortable running these questions by?

Christine thank you for your information...zithromax I know makes me very sick, but I will go to the sites you suggested. Jeff thank you...I have taken probiotics and have also made me very sick...I cannot go out of the house...diarreha strikes me even worse. I had a doctor suggest using those when I was on penicillin based meds and it made things even worse. Thanks again. I will be doing some more research on this and talking to my rheumy also.

BECJO: I never got in to the Clindamyicin or the Zithromax. Just the Minocin. Also, for some reason, the probiotics never helped me, but I know lots of people on the roadback (plus Jeff) who are doing the probiotics and seem to like them. I do eat low carb yogurt every day. Not for the probiotics, but because I LOVE IT!!!
