I went to the kidney specialist last week to go over some results of a 24 hr. collection...what was found that my magnesium levels are low and my CO2 level was 17.4...now I am not going to get treated for the low magnesium at this time, because the specialist feels it will only cause me diarreha and it's not that bad. The CO2 level for me has been holding about 18.3 to 18.4 except last week when it was 17.4...now should I be concerned about my kidneys or should I do what the kidney specialist is doing: it's not that bad and so we shall watch and see what it does? Please let me know what you think I should do? I really get nervous about waiting because we all know how fast this disease can move Thank you for your input.

Hi Becky it doesn't sound bad to me...I mean..that's perfectly within acceptable limits from what I remember when i do my 24 hr pee test....the magnesium is not uncommon in women...marsha sometimes has low mag and then she'll take magnesium pills and the next thing you know she sets off the metal detectors at the airports!!....so...I think one of the main things to keep an eye on would also be your iron levels......if it were me...I'd let it ride for a bit and see how it goes....no need to worry about every little thing..it's the overall picture you need to concern yourself with....

I found out a few years ago that my kidneys are only functioning at 50%. But the doctor decided we should take a wait and see attitude and he was right it has stayed the same. I see him in October for my 6 month visit.
I do take magnesium but it has never given me diarrhea or any problems.
I wouldn't worry if I were you. The only thing to worry about is if you blood pressure goes up, you need to get on an 'ace inhibitor' drug right away. Apparently ace inhibitor are safe for patients with kidney disease. Mine went up this year and I take Ramipril.
I wouldn't worry about this if I were you.

Thanks Steve and Sammie...I am glad you reminded me that it is a good thing that things are staying stable I am on an ace inhibitor, but it's only 5mg because right now my blood pressure is already low and they do not want me passing out. Both my kidney specialist and my rheumy will be staying in touch and making sure if anything changes it will be taken care off asap... I know I get very paranoid, because this disease is so quick and sneaky...thank you both again for reminding me that I had good news about my kidneys. I needed that God Bless and take care.
