So will it just be a matter of time before you are at the helm, with your ball cap on backwards, of a metalflake paintjob bass boat with 500 HP shooting around NH lakes catching bass? Hope you win the $50.

How was the fishing today Nancy, by the time I got out in the boat the tide was wrong. I hope tomorrow I can get out earlier and fish. So I went for a ride from the west end of the island where I moor my boat over to town to check things out. I got into town was cruising around and got stopped and boarded by the Coast Guard. In the 27 years I have had the boat I don't think I have ever been boarded.

Yes that is how it begins. You started on the dock now you bought a canoe. You are thinking that will be fine don't need anything larger. You may not know it yet but you ARE on the road to a boat I think the CG was just out getting ready for summer. A lot of people have been boarded lately from what I understand. They were nice enough and we were probably only 15 minutes or so. Pretty heavily armed too. There are some stripers around the water is still cool enough. My son caught a small one that he had to release yesterday. Bluefish around too. Today was windy here too. Yes you do need lifejackets and anchors. When on the boat alone I wear one of the inflatable ones and I have a small fanny pack that I keep a PLB and strobe in. I think with my Raynaud's if I go in I really only have a few minutes use of my hands to get situated and the safety stuff deployed. Seriously enjoy the red boat. But you are on a slippery slope. It all begins so innocently huh.

We had a 24' Trophy walk around but sold it about 3 years ago. Now looking to buy a smaller 17' Carolina Skiff T-Top. Hoping to find a good deal. May travel down to Florida in mid-January to look for something there. Any recommendations?

Your 24' Trophy was pretty much what I have. My boat is an '83 25' Grady walk around. Still in great shape I might add, yes lots of work keep it looking good. My son has a 20' Maritime skiff with a T-Top very similar to the Carolina Skiff. He really enjoys it but needs something with more V to the hull as he goes out rough conditions (for that hull) frequently. Looking for new or used? Just guessing but I would think Florida would be a good spot to boat shop. Just keep in mind that a used boat down there would have more use perhaps than the year of the boat might indicate. Also a bit closer to home you might check for boats in the Chesapeake Bay area. I purchased my boat down there back in the '87 and had it trucked up then ran it over from the Cape. It was much more reasonable there than up in my area. Fall is always a good time to shop either new used too as nobody wants to sit on a boat for another winter. There are some Carolina Skiffs here but for whatever reason the Maritimes are more popular. A Boston Whaler might be an option in your size range too. So many boats so little time...
Steve would have enjoyed this thread I think.

Jeff, Thanks for all the useful information!!! You have a "Grady"…..my favorite!! Our Trophy was new in 08 and we sold it 2011. Didn't have a trailer so we always had to pay for slips and storage. Decided we wanted something smaller and easier to trail. I'll mention the Maritime to my husband, Tom. Don't see many of them around here. Like the Boston Whalers too! Tom wants a boat that was used a lot as he was told the northern boats don't get run a lot and sometimes don't get winterized properly. He thinks the more they were used the better. I think the more they were used the more worn out they are! Ha!
Gee, miss all this boat talking without Steve!! I'm sure he would have put his 2 cents in!! I still have him & Marsha in my email and FB and can't seem to delete them. I wonder how Marsha and "the kids" are doing? Goes to show that we are "family" on here!! Thank you for taking over the helm!!

I have not much to contribute to this thread...my family did have a boat back in the 80's. It was an Egg Harbor and my dad named it the "Christel"-- hmmm. I know I did weigh much more then, but didn't think I was as big as a boat...!! Jk. I think Dad did it more of an honor to me, his firstborn child. Ahhh, those were the days.
Yes, Steve would have made this board and post much more lively.

Christel I think your dad naming the boat after you was indeed an honor and not a dig. Naming the boat after his first child is pretty nice. Nancy, used too much or used too little I think depends on the previous owner. I am of the if it looks good it probably is good school. One needs to have a proper survey of course and with the computers in todays out boards I don't think you can hide too much info. about the motors condition. I am an I/O guy though. The Maritimes are more pricey than a Carolina Skiff from what I hear but are a more finished boat. The quality of my sons is good. It is not flashy but just a good strong boat.
