A friend, non SD, has recently been DXd with Barrett's esophagus. I know that it has been mentioned on some SD boards but was not too familiar with it. Doing a bit of research it appears that a suspected cause is reflux and cells normally found at the lower end of the stomach and intestine end up in the lower esophagus. In its later stages it can become cancerous and is aggressive.
Anybody have any first, or second, hand knowledge of this condition?

Yes, Jeff, this is quite common in SD. I also happen to have a (non-SD) friend with it. With regular monitoring, it is no biggie! As with anything, we need to be aware of any abnormal symptoms!

Thanks Christel from what I see it looks like it depends on what stage the cells are in the esophagus. What I am getting from my reading is that the cells have four stages from "we can deal with it" to cancer. Is that the way it goes or am I way out in left field? She is waiting for the lab work with any luck she caught it early on.

I have heard the same thing, Jeff. Hope by now your friend is on the meds and on the mend.

No meds yet she had gone gluten free a while back and the docs told her she has to go off the diet and eat normally for a while then be tested. She said she had just gotten over the craving part and was settling in with the diet. Now she has to start over after the tests. I have not seen her to ask what the deal is but that is what she told my wife. Go figure.

That sounds strange to me. I wouldn't think they were related. I'll be interested to hear about this one!

I have been busy and not been able to catch up with her. From what she said it is not that the diet and Barrett's are related but it was something about diet and the testing results. Doesn't make sense to me either, she is a nurse so she should have some good info/explanation when I see her. I'll let you know what I find out.
