There are lots of theories as to the cause of SD. What do you feel is the most likely cause (or combination of causes) and why?

stress for sure.... back when mine first started....boeing engineers went on strike....we were out for 41 days picketing and all...well..me being a navy brat, ex-air force, civilian working for the navy...it was unthinkable to go on strike....to go on strike in the military is tantamount to mutiny...thus ..if convicted of mutiny...you spend eternity making big rocks into little rocks....aka prison with hard labor... so..although I agreed about the reasons of going on strike for the engineers...my 2 little braincells fought a vicious battle and I kept imagining myself living in a box under the freeway or worser...(is that a word??).. well..we won...went back to work and a few weeks later marsha and I bought a boat...now one thing I never realized about owning a boat...there's no brakes.....so..our first weekend on the boat was about as stressful as one can imagine...when we bought the boat..we were given the keys....the boat was dropped off at the marina and they told us to have fun!!!!.. well...to say our first days were exciting is a little understatemented...... when we went to put the boat up...I blew up like a balloon and couldn't hardly walk...marsha had to push me up the ramp and also unload the boat for me.....it was aweful.....thought I was gonna die or something...which I almost did..... plus I had a photo business going on ...shooting 14-16 weddings a summer...portraites....senior shots...etc....it was about as stressfull as I could get....
so..for me ..it was stress.....

I think it is in the system but becomes manifested....active...due to a stressful situation. Mine they think was brought on due to a drug I was taking that really stressed out my body with side effects. Off that to discover that SD had come into being. That is the thought for me for I'm "too old" to have gotten SD...in early 60's.
That being said, since SD is autoimmune disorder, my family(parents, cousins, aunt/uncles, daughter, grand daughter to name a few) has many...RA, celiac, and several others....so I'm not surprised that I got "hit" with something!

My first symptoms began (19yrs. ago) immediately after the birth of our first daughter. Beforehand, I was a healthy active 28yr.old and experienced a happy healthy pregnancy. Things went downhill shortly after she was born. Thank goodness my doctor realized that my symptoms weren't just "post-partum" and sent me straight to a specialist for testing and treatment. With that being said, I lean toward the "fetal-cell transfer theory" in my case... possibly??? I wasn't stressed in the least, happiest time of my life and my health was excellent, until birth??? Who really knows the combination of factors that brings on this crazy disease?

I believe that perhaps we all start with being genetically disposed somehow and then there are a number of different ways that SD develope. For women I am a believer in the fetal cell transfer that Kathsherman mentioned. The idea of a stress related onset also makes sense to me as Spring time is always a VERY busy time at work for us being in a vacation community and for years I was always feeling very fatigued and sick by fourth of July. Just felt awful. After a month or so I would feel my normal but not so great self. It went on for years and was always sort of a mystery. Now I am pretty sure it was me trying to fight off SD. Another observation I have is that a lot of the guys with SD work in the trades and/or around chemicals. In that same vein I have often wondered about the makeup you women use, lots of chemicals there too. So in short lots of roads to SD maybe.
I think about where SD comes from and hope they do find the cause someday so others don't have to deal with this. I don't spend a lot of time agonizing over where came from as I already have it. Like most of us probably. When I found out what I had it was more important for me to learn how to deal with SD than where it came from.
