I need to shed a few pounds and have been doing my low carb version which I have used before. I have been on a couple of weeks and what I have noticed is that I have no reflux at all. I am actually just back to my old way of eating but had sort of fallen off the wagon and need to lose ten pounds. I thought it was interesting about the lack of reflux, normally I have very little but the past two weeks I have none. If the trend continues I may try to get rid of the prilosec.

Not rid of the pill yet but I'll see what happens. It would be nice not to have to take it.

i tried to limit my diet and lower the usage of prilosec....didn't happen....had to go back up...it seems....and I'm not positive about this...but once the damage is done by the stomach....and it starts producing more acid than needed...the stomach doesn't want to turn off....so...it keeps pumping acid.....if you can get off of the stomach meds...that would be great.....
everytime I've tried....I'd wake up in the middle of the nite like I was having a heart attack.....then the burning would kick in.....aweful.....cuz then I'd wake up having to go pee!!!..

awesome Jeff!....one thing that really works for my reflux is not to eat after 8 pm....I crave like crazy but...it's really scary to wake up in the night with acid in your throat...I am taking Nexium twice daily, maybe at some point I can back off to once, keep us posted!

Still seems to be about the same. I really feel that the acid level is reduced. I have not tried to eliminate the prilosec, I wish they made a 10 mg pill so I could go to that. I have been sort of stressed and busy at work so I would say it has been a good test. I'll keep you posted. Lost a few lbs too

No question about it! I had the same experience when I was on my low carb diet 3 years ago. I just got a list from the doctor's office.
HERE IS WHAT MAKES REFLUX WORSE: Oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, taco sauce, salsa, pizza sauce, hot sauce, ketchup, potato chips, french fries, chocolate of any kind (includes candy, cookies, mints, milk , ice cream), deep friend foods, hot dogs, salami, pepperoni, sausage, bologna, ham, carbonated orange or grapefruit juice, citrus drinks, caffeinated tea, coffee, alcohol.
HERE IS A LIST OF FOODS THAT ARE REFLUX "FRIENDLY": Apples, bananas, cantaloupe, pears, peaches, nectarines, melon, grapes, apricots, cherries, berries, plums, asparagus, beans, beets, broccoli, carrots, celery, corn, lettuce, peas, sweet peppers, potatoes, spinach, squash, sweet potatoes, bagels, biscuits, cake, muffins, oatmeal, macaroni, pancakes, rice, waffles, bread, dry cereal, milk, yogurt, mild cheese, custard, ice cream, frozen yogurt, eggs, lean beef, chicken, lamb, pork, fish, tuna, shrimp, apple juice, grape juice, water kool-aid.
Sooo, the worst thing on here is anything chocolate and I eat a TON of chocolate!
Also, the list says DO NOT LIE DOWN OR GO TO BED for 3 hours after eating.
PS: I take Zegarid. If I could just control my eating--which I need to do right now, perhaps I could get off the Zegarid!

I had that list a while ago and I sure can agree with the mints, milk, and deep fried foods like the french fries! There are many tomatoes now that are low acid ( I have to add lemon juice to my canning of tomatoes for too low in acid) so I don't find that a problem....and carbonated stuff is out for me. Good list and good reminder. Thanks Cubby.

Update - The low carb regime has definitely cut down on the stomach acid. I did try to give up the prilosec and made it about four days. Towards the third and fourth day my stomach did begin to get a bit uneasy. No reflux but more acid feeling than usual. I wish they made a 10mg tablet. I may try taking one pill every other day and see what happens.
