I started to develop some light bluish tinged areas in my sclera (I am the onlyone who notices it) and have a blue spot in one eye. I also have a couple blue areas on my back. I had read enough about mino to know to watch for these signs of toxicity, so I spoke to my AP doc and he switched me to doxy 100 mg BID on 3/9/11. Just wanted to let everyone know that I had a lot of concerns about the switch from mino to doxy, as mino had worked so well for me. I am doing fine--other than the stomach upset if I don't eat something when I take the doxy. I researched foods without calcium or iron and came up with a few things. My AP doc said the bluish discoloration will fade in about 8-12 months.

I have some dark spots on the sides of my face behind my eyes and just in front of my ears. I don't have any eye discoloration at this time. My Rheumy told me mine was purly cosmetic and would not cause me any problem. The areas that are effected in my case are areas where I had skin tightning. I am at a point (still) where I am wrestling with dosage reduction. Not sure what to do yet. I have read that Vit. C will reduce the spots but Vit. C always makes give me joint stiffness. So no go there. Right now I will just live with it.

Update on the switch from Mino to Doxy on 3/9/11. Doing very well--no problems other than occasional GI upset with Doxy, which I resolve with food. Only take food w/o calcium, iron or magnesium or it will interfere with the absorption of Doxy. No flare up of SD and life is good!

VONNI: So glad to hear the Doxy is working for you.
I am on Doxy temporarily, thanks to my Periodontal procedure. The doxy gives me heartburn and makes me sick to my stomach for a short while. Can't wait to get off it and back to my Minocin. Never had any side effects from it, thank God. I know others have had problems, but knock on wood, not me.

Cubby, was your periodontal problems caused by scleroderma? I'm beginning to think that a couple of my teeth are getting loose and wonder if it's being caused by the Ssc. I really dread going to the dentist about it because when I had to have a bridge a few months ago and had shots in my mouth, it was terrible. I guess it was so much worse than usual because my face and mouth are hard and tight. Ugh...really dread going.

Melanie - I went through a period where my teeth moved quite a bit. Every morning they seemed to be in new spots. I noticed it first a couple of years before my SD went active, all of a sudden I developed a food catch between a couple of teeth. I never had any gum problems though.

Hi Guys! As always, I sorry it took me so long to get back on the board. I can only get on here when I am on my computer as the screen is too hard to read from my blackberry.
Anyway, to answer the question as to whether or not the scleroderma affects the teeth, YES at least according to many posts I have read where people are having their teeth pulled or losing them due to bone loss and other issues from the scleroderma.
Even tho I get my teeth cleaned every 3 months and RELIGIOUSLY use my water Pik twice a day with my electric toothbrush, I still run into problems sometimes. It is unclear what part the scleroderma played in my recent teeth activity bit I think none or very little contribution. Also, for about 10 years, I have been wearing a retainer and nightguard which helped keep my teeth from moving.
The trip to the Periodontist was due to some gum loss (which has been coming on for several years) and also a tooth that has been a problem for about 10 years or more.
I hope I answered your question even tho it is a little late.

Just thought I'd update on the progress with doxy. I've been on doxy 100 mg twice daily since 3/9/11 and doing great! No trace of SD and I feel wonderful! Continuing to treat the chronic lyme with azithromycin and several other supplements. I'm glad I got off the mino due to the side effects, but it was scary since I looked at it as my "savior" drug at the time. I cannot believe how much better I am today. Just in the last 3-4 months things have really improved. I did have a 3rd round of IV clindamycin in June just to give it a "kick in the pants." I wish everyone could have this result.

Dr. F. just switched me to Doxy 100mg twice daily due to my face becoming very patchy dark. I'm also directed to take 1K-3K Vit C daily. We'll see how everything goes.

Randy I too had read on the boards about Vit. C being helpful to remove the dark areas. I have always had issues with Vit. C making my joints hurt. I go on it they begin to hurt, I go off Vit. C and the pain subsides. I am sort of bummed because everyone else appears to have good results with the Vit. C and the dark spots easing. Maybe if I can get my courage up I'll try again. I have reduced my mino dose to 100 mg. three days a week, so far no dark spot fading. Good luck with the doxy and please keep us posted. What mino dosage had you been on before the switch?

Hi Jeff,
Please accept my apology for not responding sooner. I have tried to figure out how to receive email alerts when a thread I'm involved with is responded to, but I have not been able to do it. Is it possible?
I believe my symptoms have worsened a bit since January, so I had increased Mino to pretty much 5 days/wk and IV's every 6 wks. Dr. F. now has me on 5 days/wk of Doxy 100mg twice daily. I'll let you know how Doxy compares for me - Jury is still out.
