Yes,weather is still quite nice and should be for the next few, according to forecasts. My daughter who lives in Chicago is coming to town for the weekend today, although she is going to a wedding for a couple of days for one of her sorority sisters--so I am not sure if that counts...!
I was back at the wound clinic yesterday, and the doc is still pleased with my progress. He said this is going to be a long process-probably up to a year. I am in excruciating pain right now, though, a little worse than usual. The pain is of a burning nature along the front of my lower leg and into my heel. Just waiting for meds to kick in. Bummer.
Hope all of you are doing well. Thanks for your concern!
Love, C.

Hello Christel, A year! Wow that can seem like a long time. Are you keeping a journal? It may help to see that it really is getting better.

I got a week's break to be on my own. I do my own daily dressing changes. I still have that darn burning pain in my lower leg that I spent five days in the hospital for in July... The wound isn't getting any smaller but I do believe it looks 'pulpier' and appears to be filling in, so I am going to take that to be a good thing! We will see if the good doctor concurs next Wednesday. No longer on any antibiotics or strong pain meds!! Mainly using increased doses of Neurontin for pain relief, which does seem to help! Will keep you all posted-- I imagine a lot of my healing had to do with that good quality fruit I had a couple of weeks ago!!! Ahem... C.

Back to wound clinic on Wednesday for recheck after a week off. I thought I was doing better until an increase in pain and drainage again on Saturday night. I am really bad with the pain when I first get up in the mornings, and for about 45 minutes until meds kick in.. It actually feels like someone is holding a blowtorch to my lower leg. Then I am afraid to move for fear of the pain coming back the same way. Not good. I will be curious as to what the doctor says. My husband and I think I should seriously give some consideration to hyperbaric therapy. Has anyone with scleroderma tried it for an unhealing wound? Please let me know--also what the cost with and without insurance was. I must start entertaining some other possible options.

I was seen at the wound clinic this am and told them how much worse the pain is, especially with the onset of the cooler weather and it's exposure to tissue and nerves. I was given a referral for a consultation to a hyperbaric chamber. I first have to see my primary care physician for an official referral there through my insurance, which should not be an issue. My insurance did say they would cover treatment there, but I will be responsible for the copays with each visit. That is what could add up with the numerous visits usually needed for wound healing. I don't know what choice I have at this point, with the unrelenting pain. I will keep all of you posted!!

Really curious about the hyperbaric treatments. It should get more O2 into your tissue. I was speaking with someone in health care the other day and they said they had seen treatment of a non healing leg wound with O2. They had used a standard O2 mask and taped it over the wound and hooked up the O2. Don't know how often or for how long but it did heal the wound. There is a wound care center over on Cape Cod and the ad spots are interesting. Today they were saying one should not use hydrogen peroxide other than to initially clean wound as the HP kills tissue too so it should not be used after the initial cleaning as is harmful to the new tissue. I did not know that. Anyway hope you can get signed up at the clinic soon. Hope you can see some significant pain relief soon!
