Hi everyone,
Been reading about the shingles virus and the vaccine for it I see that those with autoimmune disorders get shingles more than others. I am checking with my doctors to see if I can get the vaccine since I've had chicken poxes twice as well as having SD.
The vaccine is expensive....about $300....if the insurance doesn't pay for it. Wondered what you all knew about this. Have you had the vaccine?

I do not know much about it Grammie but am curious also. I have had shingles and don't know if it is safe to receive the vaccine. Also is it safe with our SD?

Great question. I have had chickenpox and am therefore at higher risk for shingles. I have not specifically asked my physicians about the vaccine, but am thinking they may want me to get it (the shot, that is!). Getting the flu shot each year is so highly recommended, especially for those with weakened immune systems. It seems a little contradictory to me, but what do I know... I will make a point of asking about the shingles vaccine next doctor visit.

I was also wondering the same thing... I had the Shingles when I was approx. 42yrs of age...My brother who will turn 68yrs next month wanted to get it, but his insurance will not cover it... He does not have MEDICARE due to being covered under our Borough Plan because he was a Police Detective...... He did tell me it is shipped to the Doctor's offices on ice... When I first started taking an Immune Suppressant Drug, I was always told I couldn't even be around my grandchildren is they received any childhood immunizations containing a live virus. Now my grandchildren usually get the nasal flu vaccine & was told, do not go around them for atleast 10 days...Our daughter who works for a doctor says, if they require refridgeration or anything, then it contains a live virus... Guess I will have to check this one out too !! HAPPY NEW YEAR, Donna

Turns out there were other things I needed to discuss and I forgot this one! I'll try again next week when I see them again.

I had chicken pox as a baby and then had shingles really bad when I was 12 years old. It was the worst pain of my life......even more than childbirth. I have scars from the blisters.

From my reading I found that many of us SDers have had shingles prior to SD symptoms. How many of you have had them previously? I had shingles in 2002, three years prior to my SD becoming active.

Interesting reading....and thoughts. I was told to get the shot at PC doctor but we do need to see if insurance will pay for it. I had chicken pox twice....as did my doctor! She said to go for it!

The chicken pox was as a child and twenty years or more before SD.
Our insurance will pay for it in a doctor's office but not at the drug store. So we are to get it in two weeks. Sure hope there isn't a side effect to it!

Well, my husband checked and rechecked on the insurance paying for it. Then we found that the doctor was sending us to the vaccination clinic to get the shot. Once there, we found we had to pay for it up front at the pharmacy to the tune of $218 each! However, Ralph had found that we were to send it into the insurance to get the money back and since it was the hospital pharmacy it would be fine.
He has now submitted it and had a question so called the insurance folks and happened to have the gal to whom he was to send it all to. Was told there'd be no problem. Hope they are correct!
Did find that the vaccine will protect only about 60% of the folks from getting shingles but if we got the shingles it isn't nearly as painful. Just hope I'm in the 60% group!

Interestingly, I has shingles 3 times prior to getting scleroderma. The worst part is the first time, I had all the pain and burning for about months before I ever got blisters, so at first no one could figure out what was wrong with me!
I have a friend at the pool who got the shingles shot 2 weeks ago and got shingles from it! Needless to say, I decided against the vaccine.
